Tanweer Fazal

Prof. Tanweer Fazal is a political sociologist and Professor at the School of Liberal Studies, BML Munjal University (BMU). His research focuses on nationalism, citizenship, minority rights, rights and entitlements, public policy, and collective violence, with particular attention to the experiences of minorities in India and South Asia. He previously taught sociology at the University of Hyderabad (2020–2025), JNU (2014–2020), and Jamia Millia Islamia (2006–2014). He holds a BA in Sociology from Aligarh Muslim University, and an MA and PhD in Sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University. BMU
He is currently a Humboldt Research Fellow (2025–27) and has held fellowships and visiting positions in Germany and the US. His books include The ‘Nation-state’ and Minority Rights, The Minority Conundrum, Marginalities and Mobilities Among Muslims in Contemporary India, and Practices of the State: Muslims, Law and Violence in India. He also served as a research consultant to the Sachar Committee in 2005–06.
