Karvaan India is an independent digital newsroom and cultural institution built on a simple belief that people are more important than those who govern them. We believe journalism should begin with ordinary experience, then follow it towards the institutions, policies, laws and structures of power that govern daily existence.

Our approach, which we call Bottom-Up Journalism, starts with the people who live through the consequences of power. We report on politics, law, justice, society, the environment, public affairs, culture and history, paying particular attention to perspectives that mainstream newsrooms have often overlooked.

We follow stories to the ground, listen to those directly affected, question the institutions responsible and place events in their wider political context. We also want to know who was affected, whose voices were missing and what remains once the news cycle has moved on.

Culture has long been part of this mission, because understanding India will always require an engagement with its histories, languages, literature, art and collective memory. Through books, workshops, heritage work and conversations we document public life that journalism has too often overlooked. We are also building a sustainable economic model, including memberships, partnerships and Café Karvaan, so that editorial independence will never depend on clicks.
