News: In a first for a Muslim-majority nation, same-sex marriage was purportedly accepted as a legitimate union.

  • According to an LGBTQ organization in Tunisia, called Shams, a Tunisian man and a French man who married in France were able to get their marriage recognized in the North African country.
  • Homosexuality is illegal in Tunisia and punishable with up to three years in prison.
  • Same-sex married couples are not recognized by the Tunisian government which is a manifestation of discrimination against the LGBTQ community.
  • Shams wrote in an April 24 post on Facebook about the “new achievement for gay Tunisians,” showing the first legal same-sex marriage in “the history of Tunisia and of the Arab world”.
  • The names of the couple were not made public. And Shams is the only recognized LGBTQ organisation in Tunisia.
