A 71-year-old Rohingya man died from the coronavirus on May 31. He was undergoing treatment at a refugee camp’s isolation center in Bangladesh.

Here are five components of the story:
  • Hundreds of thousands of refugees live in the camps set for Rohingyas in Cox Bazar, Bangladesh.
  • Rohingyas fled the persecution by the Burmese military back in 2016 and came all the way to Bangladesh’s coastal cities.
  • The camps in Cox Bazar are squalid with a lack of proper healthcare and clean water. Thousands of Rohingya live in tightly packed tents and shacks that increase the risk of the spread of the virus.
  • At least 29 Rohingya have tested positive for the coronavirus so far.
  • The death of the 71-year-old escalated fears about a potentially devastating outbreak in a ravaged community.
