Around 25,000 people have been granted domicile certificates in Kashmir since last month. The move raises the fears of an undergoing demographic change in the valley.
After the revocation of the constitutional ‘special status’ to the region, Article (35A), a local citizenship law that blocked outsiders from the valley, was also scrapped making it easy for the Indian establishment to alter the demographic trends in the region.
According to an Al Jazeera report, the certificate entitles a person to residency and government jobs in the region, which till last year was reserved only for the local population.
This comes at a time when Israel is also aggressively crusading against Palestine to annex the region.
Most of the certificates issued were concentrated in the Jammu region.
