Despite concerted efforts to raise voices against issues like rape, child trafficking, domestic violence, sex rackets, and other forms of violence against women and girls, these issues still plague India. Many major cities in the country are still considered unsafe for women and girls. When considering India moving forward as a nation, it is important to raise the question of how this is possible if the status of women, girls, and other vulnerable populations remain the same. In order to address pervasive issue of violence against women and girls, the governement, NGOs, and other responsible organisations need to identify the root cause of these issues. On an individual level, District Collector of Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, KS Kandasamy helped in preventing violence against girls when he bravely saved 50 girls who were being sexually abused in a missionary home.
Saving the girls from the deplorable situation
After being informed that the Mercy Adaikalapuram Missionary Home was violating government regulations, Kandasamy went and visited the home to assess the situation. What he saw shocked him. The state of the infrastructure was very bad and the the 50 girls, aged 5-22 years old, were being supervised by a male security guard. Luban Kumar, the 65-year-old director of the home, also lived in the same house. Given the circumstances, Kandasamy knew that something was awry and began an investigation.

The bathroom used by the girls did not have a door and the girls were, therefore, mad to change in the hallway.
“Luban Kumar had purposely removed the doors of all the bathroom stalls where the girls bathed. His room was attached to this bathroom and he would open a window to see the girls showering. In addition to this, he had set up a CCTV camera in the hall where they changed and would watch from his room,” Kandasamy said in an interview with The News Minute.
It was also revealed that Luban’s wife, Mercy, had a hand in the incident. One time she sent Luban’s brothers to beat the girls and to ensure that they would keep silent about what was happening.
Taking strict and immediate action
After finding out about the abuse that the girls were enduring, Kandasamy moved all the girls to a government home. Slowly, the girls one-by-one began to open up to the District Collector and revealed the horrific incidents they endured in the missionary home. A complaint has been lodged against Luban Kumar, his brothers, Mercy, and missionary home has been subsequently closed.

K S Kandasamy has set up an example of how to deal with such criminals effectively and efficiently. He saved the lives of all these girls and gave them new reasons to live. Recently, he also saved a 17-year-old girl from child marriage and provided her ₹3 lakh for her UG course in nurturing. Hats off to him for implementing such quick measures and leading by example!
