She’s 108, Lived Through the Spanish Flu and Just Beat Covid-19- NYT

Sylvia Goldsholl who turned 108 in December contracted the coronvirus and was in isolation. Her relatives were troubled as the virus is especially deadly for older people.

Two weeks later Sylvia recovered from the deadly virus. The NYT reported, “Ms. Goldsholl’s case is a rare bright spot in New Jersey, whose current death toll from the virus — 9,946 through Thursday — is second only to New York State’s.”

Coronavirus has taken a toll on the world’s most resourceful country. Older people were hit hard by the virus. Roughly one third of the 86,607 coronavirus deaths have been nursing home patients and workers.

In this mayhem long-term care facilities that cater to a vulnerable population have become hotspots. Ms. Goldsholl is one of those who live in these care facilities. She lives in the Allendale Community for Senior Living in Allendale, N.J., was born on Dec. 29, 1911, and grew up in the Bronx, the eldest of four children of Russian immigrant parents.

When she was a kid she braved the Spanish flu pandemic in 1918 and 1919, and she also lived through two world wars and the Great Depression.

A nephew calls her “Forrest Gump”. “Ms. Goldsholl worked as a bookkeeper and never married or had children”, said the report.

In the community she is known to people as “Big Sister” due to her inquisitive qualities. “She uses a wheelchair and has lost some vision and hearing in recent years, relatives said, but she remains active and social, whether playing bingo or holding court in the center’s dining room”, notes the report.
