Delhi Police today held Meeran Haider, a PhD scholar at Jamia Millia Islamia and also youth leader of RJD for interrogation in a case related to violence in Northeast Delhi last month.

According to his friends, Haider was summoned today by Delhi Police for interrogation in a case related to communal violence in Delhi. He has been named along with former JNU student Umar Khalid in the First Information Report.

According to his friend and former roommate, “Meeran Haider left for Special Cell Branch at Lodhi Road today in the afternoon with his two relatives for interrogation. The policemen had to come to his residence in Jamia Nagar last evening to hand out a notice of interrogation.”

“We went to Lodhi Road-based Special Cell office in Delhi today along with Meeran Haider. After grilling him for hours, the police asked us to leave while Meeran was asked to stay back. So far, we have not been informed if this is a detention or an arrest, “said, Tanveer, who accompanied the scholar to Delhi Police Special Cell headquarter.

The FIR dated March 6, 2020, reads that Umar Khalid along with Meeran Haider and Danish, a resident of Gokulpuri had instigated people to come out on streets during US President Donald Trump’s visit to India.

So far Delhi Police has not come out with an official confirmation on this.
